Understanding VA Ratings

VA disability ratings determine how much compensation you receive each month. Ratings range from 0% to 100% and are based on how much your service-connected conditions impact your ability to work and function.

The VA Rating Formula

The VA does not simply add percentages together. Instead, they use a "combined ratings" formula that calculates how each condition affects your remaining efficiency.

Example

If you have a 50% rating, the VA considers you 50% disabled and 50% efficient. If you then receive a 30% rating, it applies to the remaining 50% efficiency:

30% of 50% = 15%
50% + 15% = 65%
Rounded to the nearest 10 → 70%

What Affects Your Rating?

1. Severity of Symptoms

The VA uses diagnostic criteria to determine how severe your condition is.

2. Medical Evidence

C&P exams, private medical opinions, and treatment records all play a major role.

3. Impact on Daily Life

The VA considers how your condition affects work, mobility, mental health, and daily tasks.
