How to Write a Strong Statement in Support of Claim

← Back to Blog

Why Your Statement Matters

Your Statement in Support of Claim (VA Form 21-4138) is your chance to explain your condition in your own words. A strong statement can help the VA understand how your disability affects your daily life and why it should be service-connected.

Key Elements of a Strong Statement

1. Be Clear and Direct

Avoid long stories or unrelated details. Focus on the condition, when it began, and how it impacts you today.

2. Describe the In-Service Event

Explain exactly what happened during service that caused or worsened your condition.

3. Explain Your Current Symptoms

The VA needs to understand how your condition affects your daily life — work, sleep, mobility, mental health, etc.

4. Keep It Honest and Straightforward

Don't exaggerate. Stick to the facts and describe your experience clearly.
